| PLM Best Practice Library by Roger Tempest |
|
| The first two workshops in the PLM Standardisation series focused on conventional, formal standards that may be needed for PLM. The Gothenburg Workshop made a large stride forward with the generation of a new standard for PLM Governance, (see 2PLM June 06), which will enable companies of all sizes to be sure that their management of PLM is thorough, consistent and accurate. This will need to be an accepted 'standard', because the Board will not pay attention if it is not.
However, in Munich it became clear that much of the 'standardisation' that we need in PLM does not have to be as formal as this. PLM managers are intelligent, educated people and well able to think for themselves. They need best practices to be expressed simply and concisely, and in just enough detail so that they are equipped to take decisions. The PLMIG has therefore established a PLM Best Practice Library that practitioners from all types of organisation can refer to. In concept, the PLM manager reaches a decision point, and looks in the Library for a simple document that indicates the best-practice way forward. Metrics, commercial value, PLM skills and concepts, roadmapping, planning, culture change, and through-life support all belong in the Library, together with advanced PDM techniques. |
The first edition of the PLM Best Practice Library has been published in the Q1 2011 PLM Journal, and will be circulated to PLMIG members this week. The PLM Section contains best practices for concepts; PLM Team skills; management and governance; strategy and planning; and for applying metrics and calculating commercial value. The PDM Section opens up the world of PDM Fundamentals, and covers the very specific discipline of PDM project management.
There is also a Specialist Subjects Section covering Document Management (a cause of millions of wasted dollars worldwide); Application Lifecycle Management; and best practice in aligning PLM and ERP. The PLM Standardisation series moves onward to Italy in September, and as more best practice is captured, the Library will be updated. More information is available via bestpractice@plmig.com.
Roger Tempest is co-founder of the PLMIG. Membership of the PLMIG is available via membership@plmig.com. |

| Going into the second half of 2011, you may be looking to find out more about PLM. The ideal solution would be to attend the 2011 Geneva PLM Conference in the first week of September. However, if you aren't able to attend, maybe because you'll be on vacation, another option is to attend a state-of-the-art PLM Workshop.
The PLM 2011 State-of-the-Art Workshop presented by John Stark Associates aims to help participants understand quickly the PLM State of the Art, identify high potential areas of PLM that are key to achievement of business benefits, and plan the next steps of their PLM projects. It's based on a decade of PLM experience, and answers frequent questions about PLM, the use of PLM, and PLM projects. |
The Workshop, which can be held on your site with your PLM Team members, is in four parts:
