| Will you join and benefit from the recently created Geneva International PLM Group?
The Group enables its members to address together PLM subjects of common interest through several types of joint activity. These include projects addressing specific areas of interest (such as benchmarking of PLM performance, creating common definitions of PLM job descriptions, etc.); as well as events such as meetings, round tables, workshops, seminars and conferences. |
The Group is independent of PLM product and service providers, and focuses on the business, management and organisational issues of Product Lifecycle Management.
Membership of the Group is free of charge. You can join here on LinkedIn. (If you are not on LinkedIn, please mail the Group, including your name and e-mail address, and the name of your organisation.) More information here on the Group's website. |

| PLM Professional Development by Roger Tempest |
|
| Exactly two years ago, in December 2009, I wrote an article in 2PLM entitled: 'PLM Industry Standards and Qualifications', based on the lack of structure and common knowledge in the PLM industry. It argued in favour of formalised PLM knowledge that is out in the open, where everyone can refer to and use it.
Two weeks ago, at the PLMIG workshop hosted by the IMechE in London, delegates were still grappling with how to convey a professional level of PLM understanding to the wider world. However, progress is being made. 2010 ended with the publication of the CEO Briefing Document, and 2011 has produced the PLM Best Practice Library, the Path to PLM, and (published this week) the PLM Governance Standard. For the first time, companies and corporations have an industry standard to follow that defines an enterprise-wide, Board-level management structure for PLM. All of these things bring shape to a previously shapeless industry, and more is in the pipeline for 2012. The user-led PLM Governance Benchmark will move forward with a Coaching Workshop for PLM managers who want to know how to benchmark their implementations. The full Benchmark later in the year will generate an immense amount of detailed information for the companies that take part. |
Even PLM standardisation is moving into the mainstream, as the PLM Innovation Congress offers to host the next PLMIG event in February. The theme moves from "standards development" to "standards implementation", to enable companies to make use of the new material that has been developed. At the Standards Implementation Workshop delegates will be able to learn how to apply the new best practices within their own companies, and also benefit from the networking and exhibits of the host event.
Roger Tempest is co-founder of the PLMIG. Membership of the PLMIG is available via membership@plmig.com. |
