| UK IMechE hosts next PLM Standardisation Workshop by Roger Tempest |
|
| The next workshop in the PLMIG series of PLM Standardisation events will be hosted by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers on December 01-02 in London.
"PLM is starting to become a key business tool as it enables a holistic approach to product development." says Philippa Oldham, Head of Transport and Manufacturing at the IMechE. "PLM not only manages the processes but can manage the data, people and business systems. The Institution of Mechanical Engineers believes that PLM is an important tool to be incorporated within businesses to ensure that the processes are lean, cost effective and driving out waste, while still maintaining high quality to produce a product fulfilling a market need." Partnership with the IMechE creates a number of new opportunities that have not been part of the series so far, and whose effects go far beyond the confines of the event itself. One of the biggest is to create a clear relationship between the UK Engineers' industry body and the whole subject of PLM. A lot of companies may become more aware of PLM as a serious subject and, in following this lead, will find it easier to adopt PLM as a result. Many of the underlying problems in PLM are due to the lack of clear national or industry-wide guidance to show the best ways of adoption and implementation. User companies have also been seeking a common voice to influence how the PLM industry develops via supplier roadmapping and delivery. |
Participation in the London Workshop will help shape this process, and lay the foundations for improvements that may be carried forward by other institutions around the world.
For delegates, the London Workshop maintains the main aims of the PLM Standardisation series:-
The Workshop will include sessions on the successes and problems of PLM implementation within UK companies; PLM standards for the extended enterprise; metrics for the benefits of implementing PLM; as well as the role of professional bodies in supporting and advancing PLM. This is an international programme for PLM, and the results are globally applicable. The London event is a chance to join in the series that has run via Sweden, Germany and Italy, and will continue to the USA. Participation is open to delegates from any country, and from all types of organisation. Roger Tempest is co-founder of the PLMIG. Membership of the PLMIG is available via membership@plmig.com |

| Publication of "Making the Product Development FrameWORK" by John Stark |
|
| This week, Intel Press announced the publication of Making the Product Development FrameWORK - Insights from the Frontlines by C.R. "Chris" Galluzzo and Deanna Bolton.
The subject of the book is uncommon, but should interest readers of 2PLM. Making the Product Development FrameWORK chronicles the implementation of a Product Lifecycle (PLC) from the mid-nineties though 2010. The book describes how a PLC can be implemented and evolved. The story is told anecdotally by the people on the front lines who actually develop products and support product development. According to the back cover, "This book is an excellent resource for managers involved in product development, whether from R&D, manufacturing, or quality. It provides a framework for how to develop products better and faster, while reducing risk in the development cycle. It's packed with fascinating real-life stories and lessons learned on change leadership. A must-read for those wanting to drive improvement changes in an organization." |
In some companies, it may be difficult and frustrating to be a PLM Project team member. Progress may be slow, and sometimes it may seem as if most people don't understand either the need for PLM or the best practices for managing products across the lifecycle. At times like this it can be helpful to refer to books showing how leading companies manage their products and their PLM projects. In addition to Making the Product Development FrameWORK, another good one to read is the recently published second edition of Product Lifecycle Management: Paradigm for 21st Century Product Realisation. |

| Governance Benchmark moves to Pre-Registration by Roger Tempest |
|
| The Discussion Stage has been completed for the PLM Governance Benchmark (see 2PLM August 29) with a core of four global companies and six others in the process of involving their management.
The next stage is to run a 'Registration Phase' during which PLM managers can meet to agree the exact methodology, and be coached in how to use the benchmarking tools. This is to ensure that everyone is happy with the work pattern and deliverables, and is prepared for when the Benchmark starts. The Registration Phase is likely to be based around a Coaching Workshop, hosted by one of the user companies. Timing for the Workshop will be arranged with the participants, and is likely to be in November. Before the Workshop it is important for potential participants to know something about the possible partners, and this will be achieved by 'Pre-Registration'. Each company will complete a structured Pre-Registration Form, and everyone who submits a form will see all of the others. |
The companies that are involved so far are all multinational, and the benchmark will be on both sides of the Atlantic, so this will be a very interesting exchange of PLM information. There is no charge to be involved in Pre-Registration, and no obligation to take part in the Coaching Workshop or the Benchmark itself.
If you would like to know how the benchmark will operate and who else might be involved, then fill in a Pre-Registration Form and keep in the loop. There is more information on the PLMIG web site or you can request a Form via governance@plmig.com. |
