Identification is crucial to life and survival. It is also crucial to business, much of it achieved through human intervention and the application of human senses. Unfortunately, human sensory capability, amazing as it is, is not always foolproof, fast or efficient enough to meet the needs of modern business. Ironically we often need recourse to human engineered systems for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of identifying items – automatic identification using machine readable systems. These are systems that are also oblivious to the fatigue so often associated with human identification over prolonged periods.
