Internet of Things

The internet has already made a fundamental impact on people, business and all other kinds of organisations throughout the industrialised world, and now they are captivated by the extension of easy internet access from mobile devices such as mobile phones and PDAs. The next phase is to enable all objects with which we interact to be given an IP Address - this is what is implied by “the Internet of Things”.

The concept of the Internet of Things extends the idea of the Internet, which is a global, interconnected network of computers, to include a network of interconnected "things", such as everyday objects, products and environments. It represents the convergence of a number of recent multi-disciplinary developments such as Ambient Intelligence, Ubiquitous Computing, Pervasive Computing, and Intelligent Products. The idea that underpins the concept is that these objects – “things” – will be capable of information processing and communication with each other and with their environment in a more dynamic and ad hoc manner than previously.
